Dimmer Doing This?

Tick everything that applies — we'll tell you how serious it is.

Dead dimmer output — attend today. A failed dimmer card can't self-resolve. Call 0422 469 739 — we carry replacement DOUT units.
Likely load compatibility fault. Call for a diagnosis — this can often be resolved same-day without hardware replacement.
Software or configuration issue. We adjust dimmer settings via C-Bus Toolkit on-site. Call to book.

Why C-Bus
Dimmers Fail

💡

Incompatible LED Load

The most common cause. C-Bus trailing-edge dimmers require compatible dimmable LED drivers. Many cheap LED downlights and globes are incompatible — they flicker, buzz, and can damage the dimmer output card over time.

Failed Dimmer Output Unit (DOUT)

Physical failure of the dimmer card inside the output unit. Usually caused by a sustained fault condition — shorted load, overcurrent event, or end of component lifespan. The DOUT unit needs replacement.

🔧

Software Configuration Error

Wrong minimum dim level, incorrect dimmer curve, or startup mode mismatch. These are software-only fixes via C-Bus Toolkit — no hardware change needed. Very common after LED retrofits or system reprogramming.

📡

Bus Noise from LED Drivers

Some incompatible LED drivers inject electrical noise back onto the C-Bus network, causing ghost messages and affecting other units beyond the dimmer. Requires identifying and replacing the offending load.

What to Do
Right Now

1

Don't keep cycling power

Power-cycling a C-Bus dimmer with an active fault — especially a shorted load — stresses the internal components. Leave it in the state it's in and call.

2

Note which circuits are affected

Which dimmer outputs are flickering or dead? Which rooms are on the same circuit? This helps us bring the right parts to the job.

3

Don't swap LEDs yourself yet

If you're unsure which LED is incompatible, don't start swapping bulbs — you may add more variables. Let us diagnose first; we'll tell you exactly what's needed.

4

Call — we diagnose same-day

Most C-Bus dimmer faults are resolved in a single visit. Call 0422 469 739 or send a message below.

Answers

How do I know if the C-Bus power supply has failed versus something else?

The clearest sign of a PSU failure is that all or most switches go dead simultaneously. If only one zone is affected, the fault is more likely in that zone's relay output unit or wiring. If ghost messages preceded the outage, that's a PSU failure profile. We confirm on-site with voltage testing.

Can you replace a failed C-Bus PSU on the same day?

In most cases, yes. We carry common C-Bus PSU models including the 5500PSUA and 5500PSUAD. If your site has an older or unusual PSU model, we'll source it from Schneider's distribution network and return promptly.

How long do C-Bus power supplies last?

The rated capacitor lifespan is typically 10–15 years. Real-world service life varies with operating temperature, load, and environmental conditions. PSUs from 2004–2012 are now well past their rated lifespan and are actively failing across Sydney.

My C-Bus was doing random switching before it stopped — is that related to the PSU?

Yes. Random switching (ghost messages) is one of the classic symptoms of a degrading PSU. As the output voltage becomes unstable, corrupted data packets appear on the network and are interpreted as commands by relay units. This is the precursor to complete PSU failure.

What happens if I leave a failing PSU in service?

A failing PSU can continue to damage adjacent network units by feeding them unstable voltages over time. It can corrupt network addresses in active units and — in the worst case — a shorted PSU can create a low-impedance path that stresses or damages multiple units downstream.

Do you cover the whole of Sydney for C-Bus PSU replacement?

Yes — Greater Sydney including CBD, Eastern Suburbs, North Shore, Northern Beaches, Inner West, Sutherland Shire, St George, Hills District, Parramatta and Western Sydney.
